Apple recently unveiled its latest iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Series 9, highlighting the significant role of artificial intelligence (AI) without explicitly mentioning it. The Cupertino-based tech giant showcased its new S9 and A17 Pro chips, which are poised to revolutionize the user experience by harnessing the power of on-device AI processing.
“Apple doesn’t like mentioning AI on conference calls or product events, which has led to speculation that the company is falling behind when it comes to capitalizing on the new paradigm,” noted Gene Munster, managing partner at Deepwater Asset Management. “The reality is Apple is aggressively pursuing AI.”
These chips represent a crucial advancement in AI capabilities, bringing faster and more secure operations to the palm of your hand. While Apple has been discreet about its AI initiatives, it’s clear that the company is vigorously pursuing AI integration across its product ecosystem.
“The smaller the transistor, the more of them can be packed onto a single semiconductor. Typically, a reduction in nanometer size can yield more powerful and efficient chips,” explained Apple, highlighting the significance of the 3-nanometer A17 Pro chip.
Behind the scenes, Apple has allocated an annual budget of approximately $1 billion to enhance its AI capabilities. Top executives, including John Giannandrea, Craig Federighi, and Eddy Cue, are driving this AI transformation. Their efforts encompass not only Siri but also the core of Apple’s operating system, iOS, and various applications.
John Giannandrea is working on a new AI system, set to take Siri to new heights. “We’re going to approach it really thoughtfully and think about it deeply because we’re fully aware of the not-good uses that it can have, and the issues around bias and hallucination and so forth,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook.
Craig Federighi’s team is integrating AI into the next iOS version. Their focus is on utilizing Apple’s large language model, known as AppleGPT, to enhance Siri and the Messages app’s capabilities, offering more accurate responses and auto-completion of sentences.
Eddy Cue’s team is exploring the integration of generative AI into development tools like Xcode, which could accelerate app development. “There’s a lot of anxiety about this, and it’s considered a pretty big miss internally,” a source with knowledge of the matter told Power On. “Generative AI has quickly become much more than a buzzword and will be central to the next several decades of computing,” emphasized the report.
Apple acknowledges the urgency of catching up with the AI advancements seen in the tech industry. “Apple’s AI progress was significantly behind its competitors,” said analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, suggesting that the company has a long way to go before it’s ready to launch its AI.
While rumors suggest the launch of “Apple GPT” chatbot as early as late 2024, Apple’s cautious approach to privacy and data integrity might extend this timeline. Apple is investing in AI infrastructure, combining cloud and on-device processing to ensure user data privacy while offering advanced AI features.
Apple’s journey into the AI landscape is not only ambitious but essential to remain competitive. The company is gearing up to introduce AI innovations across its devices, ensuring that its products provide a seamless and AI-enhanced user experience. Despite the challenges, Apple is committed to making a significant impact on the future of AI technology.
