Apple’s WWDC 2024 event, following the Let Loose gathering, is gearing up to be another highlight of the tech calendar this year. Scheduled for June 10 to 14, the conference is expected to commence with an opening speech on June 10. While previous WWDCs have primarily focused on updates to Apple’s operating systems, this year, the spotlight is firmly on iOS 18, promising significant advancements, notably in artificial intelligence (AI).
Hints dropped during the recent iPad Pro and iPad Air launch suggest a substantial AI overhaul with iOS 18. Apple teased a slew of AI-driven features, hinting at a potential game-changer for the iOS ecosystem. Although Apple remains tight-lipped about specific details, rumors and leaks paint a picture of what’s to come.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is intensifying its efforts in AI, opting for on-device processing to boost performance and privacy. Notably, Apple might introduce its chatbot, a departure from earlier speculations of collaboration with Google for Gemini. Instead, a recent Bloomberg report suggests Apple is nearing a deal with OpenAI, potentially integrating “a popular chatbot” powered by ChatGPT into iOS 18.
Reports hint at broader AI integration across various native iPhone apps. For instance, the Notes app could receive enhancements like generative suggestions and editing capabilities, thanks to on-device large language models (LLMs). Similarly, AI-backed editing features are anticipated for the Photos app, offering users more control over image manipulation.
Beyond AI, iOS 18 is poised to introduce several other notable features. Users can anticipate a more customizable Home Screen, allowing icons to be placed anywhere on the grid, addressing a long-standing user request. Additionally, support for Rich Communication Services (RCS) is expected, enhancing messaging functionalities, especially when communicating with Android devices.
The update is also rumored to bring new accessibility features like Adaptive Voice Shortcuts and Live Speech enhancements. Design-wise, iOS 18 may draw inspiration from the visionOS interface, with hints of circular home screen icons and subtle design changes across apps like Camera.
Traditionally, Apple unveils the latest iOS version at its Fall event, coinciding with new iPhone launches. After its debut at WWDC, iOS 18 will undergo beta testing for developers and the public before its official release.
In terms of compatibility, iOS 18 is expected to support a wide range of iPhone models, ensuring broader access to its new features and improvements. As anticipation builds for WWDC 2024, all eyes are on Apple as it prepares to showcase the future of iOS and its AI advancements.
